The effect of 5% Neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves aqueous extract in diethylnitrosamine and acetylaminofluorene induced hepatocarcinogenesis was studied in male Sprague dawley rats. The histological changes and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) level were measured as the biomarker of the extract effect on the liver of hepatocarcinogenesis rats. Microscopic observations have shown no significant (p > 0.05) different between cancer and cancer with Neem treated group but significantly (p < 0.05) different between cancer and non-cancer group. Meanwhile, there was a reduction of lesion in the lobular region on the liver. However, it was not significant. The GPx revealed to be higher (p < 0.05) in the cancer group compared to the non-cancer group. Within the cancer groups, the antioxidant enzyme in the cancer with Neem treated group demonstrated to be lower (p > 0.05). As a conclusion, there is a relationship between histological changes and GPx activity changes in cancer and control group. The 5% of Neem leaves aqueous extract have no significant effect in the liver of treated hepatocarcinogenesis rats.
