The mechanism of chip formation is a fundamental importance, because it relates the properties of the material to surface integrity, machinability and other machining characteristics. When machining using P20 uncoated cermets tools, the form of saw-tooth chips were observed at a combination of a high feed rate and depth of cut, and at a high cutting speed and feed rate. Besides the saw-tooth shape at the edge of the chips, tearing is also observed. Whereas, continuous chips were formed at a low combination of cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut. At a high cutting speed and feed rate conditions, the EDAX analysis shows a Ta element from cermets material was ,diffused to the chips formed. Otherwise, no diffusion of cermets material was detetvd on the underside of the chip formed
